Blog Tour & Giveaway: ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ by David Lagercrantz

Book Review

My Rating****

The famous girl with the dragon tattoo is back! Yes, you heard me correctly. The girl is back in ‘The Girl in Spider’s Web’. This book is written by David Lagercrantz, a Swedish author. This book, in a way, is a continuation of the popular series known as the ‘Millennium trilogy’. The three original novels of this popular ‘Millennium trilogy’ were written by late Stieg Larsson. These novels were not only loved, but were also appreciated by the readers all over the world. Interestingly these novels were published after the death of Stieg Larsson. Now David Lagercrantz has come out with this wonderful book ‘The Girl in Spider’s Web’ to continue the series.

Before starting this book, I had a feeling that I won’t like this book. I had my reasons for that. However, instead of citing my reasons one by one, let us get to the most important point of my way of thinking. David Lagercrantz is no Stieg Larson. Isn’t it? So, how can David Lagercrantz write as Stieg Larson had written? But, Ah! Reading this book proved me wrong. My all reasons went out of the window. And, most importantly, I cherished this book as much as I had appreciated the original novels of the ‘Millennium trilogy’. While initial 50 pages were not an interesting read, the rest of the book kept me awake much of the night and took me on a thoroughly enjoyable thrilling ride. This was definitely a ride I will cherish for a long time. Therefore, my all praises go to David for coming out with such a superbly woven tale.

Although the story is not an ‘edge of your seats’ type of thriller, it has both twists and turns. Additionally, the book keeps the eyes of the readers glued to the pages. As is generally the case with a good thriller, this book gives the readers a feeling of both excitement and anticipation leading into readers’ thinking about the outcome of certain actions. The pace of the story is also quite good and forces the readers to hook onto the mystery. In other words, this book definitely is a roller-coaster ride. I am not going to say anything about the main story-line as it can spoil the main essence of the plot. However, I would admit that this story is as fascinating as are the earlier ones. You can get an idea about the story-line from the synopsis of the book given below.

One of the difficulties in writing a novel like this is the recreation of the well-known characters. Here also the writer has emerged as triumphant. The characters in this book give you the feeling that these were painted with the same brush and with the same touch as were painted in the earlier books. Take the example of our dearly loved Lisbeth Salander as a case. She is still sharp witted and still shows the old social awkwardness. Likewise, the character of Mikael is depicted as close as we find in the earlier books. The readers will once again fall for these characters. In addition, we also see the introduction of some new characters. These characters also do leave an impact in the main story-line.

While the author has been successful in creating the same magic as we witnessed in earlier books of this series, the book is not just what we witnessed in earlier books. You do find lack of some of the elements of the earlier books. Well! You cannot be perfect in all the fronts. Taken as a whole, the author certainly has done justice to the series and this book too (like the earlier ones) will be loved by the readers all over the world.

Go for it! You will not get disappointed.
