A Paranormal Thriller of Some Weird Kind of Dreams

The Indian publishing industry is growing day by day. The tremendous success of authors like Chetan Bhagat, Amish, Ashwin Sanghi and many others have encouraged a number of aspiring writers to pick up the pen. As a result, a number of authors are coming out with their debut works every year. However, while the number of such works in India is increasing at an alarming rate, there are very few works that you can rate as worth reading or having some sort of substance. In other words, among the growing number of Indian authors, there are very few who impress you with their works. The book under review is one such  work, which you may call as an impressive first appearance of a young writer.

‘Dreams Don’t Lie’ is the first novel of Anusuya M., who is an engineer by profession and writer by passion. The book is a paranormal thriller with a pinch of mystery. As the title hints, dreams play a central role in the storyline. The storyline revolves around an ordinary guy called Wasim, who gets some weird kind of dreams about his mother. These dreams and his thirst of adventures in his life not only take him into an adventurous journey but also bring into light a number of hidden secrets about him. Wasim comes to know that his real name is Shiv not Wasim. He also comes to know that the parents with whom he is living are not his biological parents and his real parents were murdered a long time back. This adventurous journey also has a number of other twists and turns. Read the book if you want to know more about this thrilling journey. There is also a love story which runs along with the main storyline and brings some lighter moments in the main storyline.

Though the pace of the storyline is slow in the beginning, it picks up speed very soon and you keep turning the pages. The storyline is well-planned and manages to hold the reader till the end. The author has really done a good job to maintain an element of surprise. The last 80 pages, in particular, are really thrilling and the author should be especially congratulated for writing those pages. The ending scene could have been a little better though. The narrative is simple but likable. At the same time, there were some loose ends which could have been tightened. While the author has avoided too much detailing in different scenes, it goes well with the storyline. The characters have also been done well and are believable.

I was disappointed with both the book cover and the blurb. While the book cover has no connection with the main storyline, the blurb on the back cover reveals too much about the content. The blurb, without revealing anything, should be able to entice you to read the book. So, don’t read the blurb if you are planning to read this book. I also found a number of grammatical errors and spelling errors, which could have been avoided by good editing. This book ends with a promise of a sequel, which I do hope will pass through the hands of a good editor before coming into the hands of readers.

Go for it if you like paranormal thrillers. This book has a good storyline and does not disappoint you at all.
